Teaching at Venice Dojo
One-on-One Instruction

We offer substantial individualized
instruction, not just for the elite players but for
all our club members. At left is Head Instructor
Trace Nishiyama teaching a basic hip throw to two
six-year-olds. How can we afford to do this? Our
instructors are unpaid! Many of the instructors
began their own judo careers at Venice Dojo and our
now repaying their years of instruction here by
volunteering themselves.
Helping One Another

In recognition of the fact that they
receive personalized instruction at minimal costs,
and because we are all members of one team, older,
more experienced competitors are expected to help
and encourage new teammates. At right, two-time
national junior champion, Ronda Rousey is helping
two eight-year-olds get the correct position for a
basic scarf hold (kesa gatame).
Matwork: Starting Simple and Building

Many judo clubs neglect matwork for
the more exciting throwing techniques. At Venice, we
believe that champions are well-rounded athletes who
understand the basic moves, standing and on the mat.
Matwork develops strength and stamina. It also has
some very impressive moves of its own. Left, Dr.
AnnMaria Rousey De Mars instructs nine-year-old
Catalina Kelleghan in a turnover to a pin move that
was very successful among international competitors
in Miami this past year. “Cat” may not
have it down perfectly this year, but by the time
she is on the international circuit herself, there
will be few surprises in store for her, although her
competitors might get quite a number!
Situation Drills

Right, team members practice a very
common situation. The opponent has attempted a
throw, been blocked at it and fallen to his or her
knees. In a second, they will show attempt a
turnover, and, if successful, will be in the
position above!
Variety

Although we like drop Seo Nage a
lot, we constantly expand our horizons to different
throws, and teach the tecniques that fit the person
according to each individual due to body type and
skill level.
